How’s it going everyone!
So the other day I was driving around and was thinking about what deck I wanted to show off to y’all. And I had an epiphany. While I’m not the first person to think of this combo, a defining feature of card games like Eternal is players seeing new interactions. In this case I didn’t put the pieces together until this drive: Cabal Spymaster + West-Wind Herald + Bad News = Infinite attack steps. I hurried home, put a list together, and played a few matches in Casual to test out the idea, and it worked! I was so excited!
Then to avoid falsely claiming “FIRST!” I checked the Internet and I found a few lists built around this exact same combo. Honestly, I was a little bummed. But this is why games like Eternal are so great! For our folks familiar with MTG, remember the first time you saw how Splinter Twin and Deceiver Exarch worked? It may not have been during the release of New Phyrexia, but that feeling is exactly what DWD is trying to achieve! So before we get to the videos, I want to give credit where credit is due. I found the following decklists on EternalWarcry and am crediting them based on visibility of the author or the oldest decklists on the site:
- ExKirby’s decklist I’M AFRAID I’VE GOT SOME BAD NEWS from the ETS.
- Meepro’s decklist Gunsmith Combo (the oldest decklist)
- AmazingYoshi’s decklist OTK
- shedd’s decklist why did I make this (WWH Bad News)
To each deckbuilder’s credit, each decklist does something slightly different. In ExKirby’s case, he plays a Feln control plan with the potential for a combo finish. Meepro’s build is similar to my first take on the deck fitting in the WWH + Bad News combo into a Haunting Scream shell. AmazingYoshi and shedd both go all in on the combo with many ways to find or dig for the combo. So for this article I will use the list that I came up with independent from these four and play games with it. So let’s see how we do!
Bad Wind Rising:
3 Dark Return (Set1 #250)
4 Levitate (Set1 #190)
4 Seek Power (Set1 #408)
3 Suffocate (Set1 #251)
4 Annihilate (Set1 #269)
2 Backlash (Set1 #200)
4 Haunting Scream (Set1 #374)
2 Kaleb’s Choice (Set2 #188)
3 Lightning Storm (Set1 #206)
2 Quarry (Set1001 #15)
2 Direwood Beastcaller (Set1 #271)
2 Gorgon Fanatic (Set1 #375)
4 Wisdom of the Elders (Set1 #218)
3 Cabal Spymaster (Set1001 #14)
4 West-Wind Herald (Set1 #231)
4 Bad News (Set2 #30)
2 Fire Sigil (Set1 #1)
6 Primal Sigil (Set1 #187)
4 Shadow Sigil (Set1 #249)
3 Seat of Fury (Set0 #53)
4 Feln Banner (Set1 #417)
4 Seat of Cunning (Set0 #62)
2 Seat of Chaos (Set0 #60)
So as y’all can see, the deck needs some help. Even in the Casual room we weren’t able to really get going. I’ll be sure to test some of the more tuned versions in the future, but at least it’s good to know that my idea wasn’t totally terrible!
As always you can give me comments/questions on Reddit, the Discord, or Twitter @jwiley129. Thanks so much for following along and I’ll see y’all next time!
