2 Xenan Banner (Set2 #201)
The first thing I did was make some minor adjustments to the original deck; swapping 2 Decay and 2 Annihilate for 4 Banish, to deal with multi-faction cards better. The goal of the deck is to stall the game with your removal spells and lifegain until you can dig to Mask of Torment with Schemes and Xenan Augury and then switch modes and start ramping with your lifegain cards, particularly Devoted Theurge. Mask and a Theurge have incredible synergy as you can use the huge amounts of power you generate to keep ramping even further. Once you hit 20, you can start landing The Tormentor and hopefully win the game from there.
The matches ended up being pretty difficult, althought we ended up with a decent record, and I think no small part of that was because of the shift in the meta. This deck definitely feels like it’s designed to prey upon other control lists like Crystalline Chalice, not to fight through the renewed meta of Tavrod, Auric Broker and aggro decks. Still, the deck is immense fun once you start ramping up your power and if the meta shifts towards more Chalice again, I’d definitely look to try this out. Chalice traditionally is pretty soft to fliers and Tormentor is one heck of a flying beat stick.
Do you have a deck you want to see me play, or a card you want to try to break, suggest it in the comments below!
